Detailed Textual Analysis of a Front Magazine Cover
‘Pride’ is mostly seen in the genre of a women’s weekly magazine including the contents of health, hair, fashion, entertainment and beauty. This is the most common topics for women of the ages from 16-25 till mostly read and is mostly likely to be the magazines main audience. Pride is seen mostly as a magazine to give women advice and guidance on day to day things such as fashion and health.
The cover imagine on my chosen magazine is an over shoulder looking picture of the celebrity Nicole Scherzinger the image shows her looking over her shoulder bit not directly into the camera but still addressing the audience and reader as she is looking from an opposite direction in the direction of the camera. The colours of pink and yellow are used as the dominant colour scheme for this magazine as they may be seen as feminine; white is also used to stand out from the dark cover image and the plain background. The main cover story is written in white over the cover image as it stands out from the bold image of the celebrity.
The masthead is written in a capital font and covers the top fifth of the magazine still using the feminine colour of pink clearly addressing the magazine was directed towards women or older girls. The word ‘crazy’ is an example of typography as a different font is used to implify the meaning of the word for example the text around it is bold but plain and is used in other parts of the front cover whereas the font for this word is different to anything else on the front cover and it is also in a different colour this could have been done for the readers to take notice of the word in particular.
A pug is used in the top right hand corner of the magazine saying ‘your new pocket rocket’ which could attract readers as women may believe it is the only magazine they have to buy from then on but also it could suggest the magazine is essential as it covers a wide variety of subjects that woman come into contact with in everyday life. Other cover stories are used around the space of the image mostly giving a womanly approach such as ‘surviving breakups’ or other people’s views of ‘having babies too late’ or ’89 ways to get into the nurturing spirit’ could all be examples. This could attract readers as it shows it’s a magazine that covers wide range of topics and maybe have a good value for money.
Overall the main cover story is important to the message of the magazine as it is directed at women and also the sub story’s the magazine features remain in the categories such as health, beauty etc. which are all seen as feminine. The overall colour scheme foreshadows this as the colours are bright and mainly stereotyped to women or girls. The main message of the magazine is to give advice and guidance or others opinions on topics that women may find important.

Contact Sheet
I have chosen these two images because they have the best balance of light out of all six, I tried to include as much natural light as possible to create the best image. I have also chosen these as they both have plain backgrounds and are both good examples of medium close ups which will be the best frame of image to use for the front of my magazine. The one on the left is my final chosen image because it has the best lighting and the framing using the rule of thirds is better.
